In Puerto Rico, Act No. 148 of June 30, 1969 mandates that companies pay a Christmas bonus to all "qualified employees".

"Qualified employees" are defined as those who have worked over 700 hours during the 12-month qualifying period, which begins on October 1 of each year and ends on September 30 of the following year.

Christmas Bonus Rates and Requirements

Currently, Remote employs fewer than 16 people in Puerto Rico. Once the number of Remote employees in Puerto Rico reaches 16, the Christmas Bonus will increase from 3% to 6%. At that time, we will notify customers about the anticipated cost increase.

In summary, according to the regulations of the Department of Labor and Human Resources of Puerto Rico:

  • Companies with up to 15 employees are required to pay their qualified employees a bonus equal to 3% of the employee’s earned wages during the qualifying period
  • Companies with 16 or more employees are required to pay their qualified employees a bonus equal to 6% of the employee’s earned wages during the qualifying period
