Duration of parental leave

Each parent has the right to parental leave for each child in the first 12 years of the child’s life. Mothers can take up to 6 months of parental leave. Fathers can take up to 6 months, but this can be increased to 7 if he abstains from work for a continuous or split period of not less than 3 months. If a mother chooses not to take parental leave after maternity leave, she is entitled to work 6 hours a day until the child is 12 months old. Single parents are entitled up to 11 months of parental leave.

When can I start my parental leave?

Mothers can start their parental leave after the end of the maternity leave, while fathers can start parental leave during the period in which the mother takes the maternity leave. If a mother chooses not to take parental leave after maternity leave, she is entitled to work 6 hours a day until the child is 12 months old.

How parental pay works in Italy

Parental leave is paid by INPS, but the employer is paying it in advance through the monthly payslip. Parental leave allowance is equal to 30% of the average daily wage, calculated on the basis of the wage of the month preceding the start of the leave period. It is paid for a maximum total period of 9 months (but for up to 6 months for a one parent).
