Starting October 1, 2025, Remote is introducing a new, integrated time tracking and overtime management experience available to our EOR Product costumers. This fully embedded feature supports compliance with Spanish labor law, simplifies daily tracking, eliminates manual declarations, and promotes fair working practices through greater transparency.
While tracking worked hours was already required by law, we're now making compliance much easier. This new feature streamlines time tracking, makes compliance more intuitive, and lets you manage overtime directly within Remote.
Overtime should remain the exception, not the norm, and must follow the law, the applicable collective bargaining agreement, and the terms of the employment agreement. We recommend discussing and agreeing on any extra hours with team members in advance.
This article explains what's changing, how time tracking and overtime will work in Remote, and what actions you need to take as a customer.
What's changing and how time tracking works
Starting October 1, 2025, we're introducing an enhanced time tracking system where:
- Remote will actively facilitate time tracking for all team members. All full-time and part-time team members in Spain must log their daily worked hours, including breaks, using Remote's enhanced time tracking feature. If they don't, they will receive reminders to do so.
- Overtime management will be fully integrated into this feature, automatically flagging when extra hours occur. This eliminates the need for spreadsheets, emails, manual approvals, or ad-hoc incentives to compensate for overtime.
- The overtime compensation method you select will apply company-wide for all your EOR team members employed in Spain.
While overtime will be tracked automatically, we encourage you to manage workloads to avoid the need for extra hours. When overtime is necessary, it should be clearly communicated and agreed upon in advance.
How to track working hours
Team members can track time by:
- Logging hours directly on the platform
- Setting a recurring work schedule
Currently, we do not support third-party integrations for time tracking. All worked hours must be recorded directly in Remote.
Important: Logging worked hours is a legal requirement in Spain. Tracking working time is relevant for any overtime hours to be flagged and processed and to limit compliance risks. If Spanish labor laws change in the future, Remote will update the platform accordingly to help you stay compliant.
What you need to do
As a customer with team members in Spain, you're responsible for:
- Ensuring team members track their working hours daily (start, end, and breaks)
- Ensuring your managers and team review and approve overtime entries for full-time team members and horas complementarias (additional hours worked beyond a part-time agreement) for part-time team members in Remote
As we approach the launch date, we'll send you detailed information by email and update this article with resources to help both you and your team in Spain understand and effectively use the new feature.
Please use overtime sparingly and only when truly necessary, and always in accordance with legal and Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What's the legal overtime limit in Spain per year?
Team members can't work more than 80 overtime hours per year.
Remote helps manage this by:
- Flagging overtime to managers
- Sending alerts when a team member reaches 60 and 70 hours
Monitoring overtime proactively not only ensures compliance but also promotes healthier work habits.
What if we don't approve overtime?
Overtime entries must be approved or returned. If no action is taken:
- After 2 weeks, a reminder is sent to the manager (or designated reviewer) responsible for approving the team member’s time entries.
- After 4 weeks, overtime is automatically approved
Please review overtime entries on a weekly basis to avoid compliance risks and ensure workloads are being managed responsibly.
How will overtime be compensated?
The platform allows you to choose how to compensate overtime, offering options for time-off in lieu (TOIL) or payout. This choice should be made in agreement with the employee and must comply with all relevant legal and employment agreements.
Are any team members exempt from time tracking requirements in Spain?
No. All of your team members in Spain are covered under the Estatuto de los Trabajadores (Workers’ Statute), which does not provide exemptions from daily time tracking.
This means all full-time and part-time team members must track their working hours daily, including start, end, and break times.
What about part-time or async team members?
- Part-time team members must also track their time. While overtime rules may not apply in the same way, additional hours beyond their agreement (called horas complementarias) will still be flagged.
- Note that part-time team members cannot work more than 15% beyond their weekly contracted hours, and their total hours cannot exceed 40 per week
- Async or flexible-schedule team members must also record their working hours. They can log time daily or set up recurring schedules to automate tracking
Even with flexible work arrangements, it's essential to establish clear expectations—especially when extra hours might occasionally be required.
Do managers need to approve horas complementarias for part-time team members?
Yes. Any additional hours worked beyond the agreed schedule by part-time team members—also known as horas complementarias—must be reviewed and approved in Remote. This ensures accuracy in time records and supports compliance with local regulations.
These flagged hours will appear similarly to overtime entries for full-time team members and require manager action before they are processed.
Can we use a third-party tool for time tracking?
No. Time tracking must be done directly in Remote. Third-party tools are not supported.
Using Remote’s built-in time tracking ensures compliance with Spanish labor laws, allows us to flag overtime automatically, and keeps records accurate.
What happens if a team member leaves the company?
Any flagged overtime hours will be reviewed and addressed during the offboarding process. More details on how these will be handled will be included in the upcoming release.
