Childcare/Parental Leave

Eligibility

Granted to both parents (mother and father) who have a child under 3 years old, except for Zhejiang is 4 years old

Documentation

  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate

Start and End of Eligibility

  • Can be used until the child reaches 3 years old
  • Period may be calculated based on the child's birthday or the calendar year, depending on the province (e.g., Beijing uses the child's birthday; Anhui uses the natural year)
  • Can be taken in multiple periods within the year

Things to Note

  • Offers at provincial level only
  • Childcare leave is a fixed annual amount for childcare, it is not applicable to birth difficulty or multiple births
  • Number of days do not increase for multiple children under the age limit (e.g., twins or two toddlers do not double the annual leave).

Elderly Care Leaves

Eligibility

  • Originally intended for only children, but many provinces extend a shorter leave to non-only children.
  • Parent being cared for must be 60 years or above
  • The parent must be ill and/or hospitalized

Documentation

  • Parent's ID/Hukou (to verify age and relationship)
  • Medical Certificate (Hospital Discharge Summary or Admission/Diagnosis Certificate) proving the parent's illness or hospitalization.

Things to Note

  • Offers at provincial level only
  • Many provinces grant the maximum leave only if the parent is hospitalized; a smaller amount is given for general care. 
  • Inclusion of non-only children is considered an extension for a "special situation."

  • Must be used annually and is typically calculated based on the Calendar Year (January 1st to December 31st).
  • Can be taken in installments but unused days generally do not carry over to the next year.

Nursing Leave

Entitlement
Leave system designed to support adult children in caring for their parents during medical emergencies

Eligibility
When an elderly person (aged 60 or above) is hospitalized for medical treatment.
 
Duration
  • Non-only children: Up to 5 working days of cumulative leave per year.
  • Only children: Up to 7 working days of cumulative leave per year.
Pay
Full salary and benefits must be maintained.
 
Documentation

Proof of the parent’s hospitalisation
  • Hospital admission certificate or hospitalisation notice
  • Medical certificate confirming inpatient treatment
  • Discharge summary (if applicable)
This confirms:
  • The parent is aged 60 or above
  • The parent is receiving inpatient medical treatment
Proof of family relationship
 
  • Household registration booklet (Hukou) showing parent-child relationship
  • Birth certificate
  • Other official documentation proving the familial relationship
Only if applicable: 
Only-child status (if claiming extended 7 days)
  • Official certification of only-child status (where applicable), often issued by local authorities
  • Household registration documentation reflecting no siblings
