[Employer] How do I request a higher spending limit for Remote Expense Cards?
Every company starts with a default limit of 2,500 per calendar month (aligned with your billing period) in one of four supported currencies: USD, EUR, GBP or CAD. If your company's primary currency is one of these, the limit uses that currency. Otherwise, your company chooses one of the four; the amount is not an FX equivalent of 2,500 in another currency. No security reserve is required. If your team needs to spend more, a company-wide admin (Super Admin, Owner or a custom role) can request a higher limit directly from the Cards dashboard.
- You can request a custom limit between 3,000 and 50,000 per calendar month in USD, EUR, GBP or CAD directly in the platform. For amounts above 50,000, contact your Remote account team or, if you don't have one, Remote Support.
- Cards are available in all countries. The Remote entity that employs each person determines their card currency: US → USD, UK → GBP, Canada → CAD, EEA/SEPA → EUR, and rest of the world → USD.
- Higher-limit requests use your company's primary currency if it is USD, EUR, GBP or CAD. If it isn't, choose one of those four supported currencies. The request amount is not an FX equivalent converted from your company's other currency. This currency may differ from an employee's card currency.
- The higher limit applies to your company's whole Cards account: all card programs and cards share it, no matter which admin requested it. If your company uses Cards on more than one legal entity, each one has its own limit, so request the increase for the legal entity selected on your dashboard.
- Spending in other card currencies counts towards your limit after conversion to your primary currency, at the exchange rate on the day each transaction clears. Past transactions don't change when exchange rates move.
- Any limit above the default requires a security reserve of 50% of the requested limit, in the same currency. For example, a 10,000 limit requires a 5,000 reserve.
- The reserve is invoiced upfront with 14-day payment terms. Your higher limit activates automatically as soon as Billing marks the invoice as paid. Until then, you won't have access to the new limit, but you can keep operating with your current limit (2,500 by default, or the limit you already have).
- The reserve is a deposit, not a fee. There's no platform fee or per-card charge to use Remote Expense Cards.
- In your Remote account, go to Expenses > Cards.
- Select Request higher limit.
- Enter an amount between 3,000 and 50,000, or choose a suggested amount (10,000, 25,000 or 50,000). Amounts are rounded to the nearest 1,000.
- Review the reserve amount shown, then confirm.
- The reserve invoice appears in Billing, like any other invoice. While it is unpaid, your dashboard says “Your [new limit] limit is on hold” and links to the invoice.
- Pay the invoice within 14 days.
- As soon as Billing marks the invoice as paid, your higher limit activates automatically and the dashboard shows your new limit.
If you already have a higher limit and want to raise it further, you only pay the difference in reserve — what you've already paid counts toward the new amount. For example, going from 10,000 (reserve 5,000) to 25,000 (reserve 12,500) means paying an additional 7,500 in the same currency. The dashboard shows the exact amount before you confirm.
- Reducing your limit and reserve release: Remote holds the reserve for as long as your higher limit is active, with no fixed holding period. Partial reserve releases aren't available. To lower your limit, contact your Remote account team (or Remote Support if you don't have one) to return to the default 2,500 limit; the full reserve is then released to your legal entity's Cards balance, shown as Available to allocate. You can submit a new higher-limit request afterward. If you cancel Cards or offboard from Remote, the full reserve is also released. It isn't returned by bank transfer.
- Invoice terms: the reserve invoice has 14-day payment terms. If it isn't paid within 14 days, it voids automatically, your current limit stays the same, and you can submit a new request at any time.
- Overdue invoices: you can't request a higher limit while your account has overdue invoices.
- Don't see the option? It's available to company-wide admins only (Super Admins, Owners or custom roles). It may also be unavailable if your account has overdue invoices or your company isn't yet eligible for a higher limit. In either case, or if it still isn't showing, contact your Remote account team or, if you don't have one, Remote Support.
