Before you change your phone: your 2FA checklist

  • Updated

Your two-factor authentication (2FA) codes are stored in the authenticator app on your current phone. If you switch or reset your phone without moving them first, you will be locked out until you reset 2FA. A few minutes of prep avoids that.

Before you switch phones

  1. Move your authenticator app to the new phone first. Most apps (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, 1Password) have a "transfer" or "export" option. Do this before you wipe the old phone.
  2. Or add mobile push in the Remote app on your new phone, so you can approve logins with a tap, and keep your authenticator app as a backup. See How to set up 2FA with mobile push notifications.
  3. Check it works. Open the new app and make sure your Remote code appears before you give up the old phone.

If you have already lost access

You can reset 2FA yourself from the Remote login screen: enter your email and password, select Reset 2FA, and complete identity verification. See How to reset your two-factor authentication (2FA). If your identity check does not pass, or it is sent for review, contact Remote support and we will help.
