How do I convert currencies in a payroll report?
Currency conversion lets you view payroll amounts in a shared reporting currency while keeping exchange-rate details available for reconciliation. It changes how amounts appear in your report, not how payroll is processed or paid. Payroll is still processed and paid in local currency.
Currency conversion is available for Payroll and Professional Employer Organization (PEO) companies using the Pay items data format. It is not available for Employer of Record (EOR) or other report data formats.
You need permission to create or edit reports and access to the payroll data you want to include. To create a report, you need the Custom Reporting permission.
Include at least one supported amount column: Amount, Debit Amount, or Credit Amount.
- Go to Reporting and Analytics and select All reports.
- Create a report using the Pay items data format, or open an existing report’s three-dot menu and select Edit.
- In the side panel, select Manual, then Currency conversion.
- Switch on Enable currency conversion.
- Choose how to display amounts:
- Local and converted currency shows both amounts. This is the default.
- Converted currency only hides the local amount column.
- Choose the currency you want to convert to. Your company’s billing currency is selected by default.
- Under Currency rate source, choose whether to use Remote’s exchange rates or your company’s uploaded custom rates. Remote’s rates are used by default.
- Review the preview. Select Download report to export the full report as an Excel or CSV file.
If you start with a Built by Remote payroll report, duplicate it first. Open its three-dot menu, select Duplicate Report, then enable currency conversion on the copy.
You can also configure currency conversion through the AI tab in the report builder.
- Open or create an eligible Pay items report.
- Select AI at the top of the side panel.
- Ask Remote Agent to convert the amounts. For example: “Convert payroll amounts to USD.”
- Review the proposed change and select Apply.
- Refine the settings if needed. For example:
- “Show both local and converted currencies in the table.”
- “Show amounts in euros instead of my billing currency.”
- “Show amounts using my company’s custom exchange rates.”
- Review the preview, then select Download report to export the full report.
The report adds currency and exchange-rate columns automatically based on your settings. These include:
- Local Currency and Converted Currency, which identify the original and reporting currencies.
- Local and converted amount columns for the supported amount fields in your report, such as Amount (LOCAL) and Amount (CONVERTED).
- FX Rate, FX Rate Date, and FX Rate Source, which show the foreign exchange (FX) rate, its applicable date, and whether the row used a Remote or custom rate.
The preview displays exchange rates to four decimal places. Excel and CSV downloads include the full-precision rate and the same currency columns shown in the preview.
The automatically added columns cannot be renamed or reordered.
If you choose custom rates, the report uses your company’s active custom rates where available. Inactive custom rates are ignored.
If a row has no matching active custom rate, it uses Remote’s rate instead. If no custom rates have been uploaded, all rows use Remote’s rates. Check FX Rate Source to see which rate each row used.
If no applicable exchange rate can be found, the converted amount is left blank. The report does not estimate it.
- Currency conversion does not support Period 1 Amount, Period 2 Amount, or Variance Amount. Any local or converted columns added for those fields remain empty.
- Existing reports remain unchanged until you enable currency conversion.
- Conversion settings are saved with the report and retained when it is rerun or duplicated. Changing the settings on a duplicate does not change the original.
- Existing payroll reports such as Gross-to-net monthly summary and Year-to-date payroll costs remain unchanged.
