Terminations are very sensitive and the appropriate steps should always be followed to avoid penalties and co-employment risk.

This article refers to terminating or offboarding employees hired via Remote’s entities. To learn about how to offboard Direct employees visit this article.

What to do before terminating an employee

It is important that you do not discuss or communicate the termination with the employee before Remote has advised on next steps. Depending on local legislation and our country-specific process, the initial communication to the employee may need to be delivered by Remote, jointly by you and Remote, or by you after Remote’s clearance. Remote will confirm the correct approach for the employee’s country and situation.
To start the process, submit a termination request on the platform. This gives Remote the information needed to guide you on the compliant sequence, who should deliver the initial message, and what must be said.

The termination process

  1. You submit your termination request under the employee's profile.
  2. Remote reviews your request alongside the employment agreement, local labor law, and any collective bargaining agreements.
  3. A lifecycle specialist may contact you for additional details or to arrange a call.
  4. Depending on the country-specific laws and the terms of the employment agreement, Remote may need to seek additional legal advice. You will be notifies if there are additional charges before proceeding.
  5. Terms and conditions for the termination are finalized.
  6. Initial communication to the employee is delivered in line with local requirements and our process:
    • In some countries, Remote must lead the initial communication.
    • In others, a joint call with Remote and you is required.
    • In some cases, you may inform the employee directly after Remote’s clearance.
  7. Remote will confirm the required approach and provide talking points or scripts as needed.
  8. Remote shares termination documents with the employee (where required).
  9. The employee signs the termination documents, if required.
  10. Remote processes final pay and offboards the employee.

Note: The process and timelines vary by country, employment history, and context. Because of these variables, Remote cannot provide a universal turnaround time. For indicative statutory notice rules, see Notice Period for Terminations per Country, and rely on our guidance for the specific steps and who should communicate first in your case.
