Which Remote payment process applies to my company?

  • Updated

Remote uses different payment processes based on your company's product and the country or region of its legal entity. This guide helps you understand when Remote Payment Services (RPS) applies and when Remote continues to use a payment partner.

RPS applies only to Contractor Management and Payroll. It does not change how Remote processes payments for Employer of Record, Contractor of Record, or Professional Employer Organization services.

What is Remote Payment Services?

Remote Payment Services is Remote's licensed payment institution. It allows Remote to manage customer onboarding and the movement of funds directly instead of relying entirely on third-party payment providers such as Wise, Stripe, Nium, and Ebury.

With RPS, Remote can:

  • Collect customer funds in safeguarded accounts
  • Send payments to contractors and employees
  • Manage the payment experience and troubleshooting

What happens during RPS onboarding?

Before a company can process payments through RPS, it must complete a regulatory onboarding process. The company provides information about its legal structure, directors, owners, and business activities. The person completing onboarding may also need to provide identification and authorization documents.

The onboarding process may request:

  • The company representative's personal details and a valid government-issued photo ID
  • A letter of authorization if the person completing verification is not the company's legal representative
  • The company's legal name, registered address, and registration number
  • The full legal names and dates of birth of company directors
  • Information about the company's ultimate beneficial owners
  • A short description of the company's business activities

The company also accepts the terms that apply to RPS payment services.

What happens after business verification?

After the company completes business verification, bank accounts for Payroll employees or Contractor Management contractors are queued for approval as trusted beneficiaries.

Customer administrators receive an email asking them to review and approve the bank account details. Before approving a bank account, each administrator must complete an identity check.

After the required bank accounts are approved, the legal entity can use RPS for Payroll or Contractor Management payments.

What happens when a company moves from Nium or Ebury to RPS?

A company that currently uses Nium or Ebury moves to RPS after completing RPS onboarding. The RPS go-live month is normally the month after onboarding is completed.

For example, if a company completes RPS onboarding on June 15, its June Payroll payments remain with the existing provider. RPS begins processing its Payroll payments in July.

Are there additional fees for using RPS?

No. Remote does not charge additional fees for using RPS beyond the standard fees that apply to Contractor Management and Payroll payment services.

Does RPS change the Payroll calendar?

No. Payroll calendars do not change when a company uses RPS. The company must continue to approve the Payroll run and send funds to Remote's safeguarded account four business days before the payout date.

Which currencies does RPS support in the European Economic Area?

RPS currently supports only EUR funding and payments for customers in the European Economic Area. If a company uses another functional or payout currency, Remote may continue to use Ebury or Nium.

Can a company prefund Payroll or contractor payments?

No. RPS does not currently support prefunding. The company must send the exact amount required for its Payroll run or contractor transaction receipts.
